I think some pages have already begun providing context on the side of their articles, which is great. Also, you seem to have snuck in the ability to add a table of content to articles, thank you!

Keeping the left pane collapsible like Medium's current iteration (clicking on the profile picture) would keep the story at the heart of the reading experience.

I hope Medium's clutter-free experience isn't compromised in the name of easy access.
